چکیده

We present what is believed to be the initial report of hard-palate infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis. The organism was cultivated from biopsy material obtained from a diabetic patient presenting with complaints of headache and malaise. Radiologic findings revealed a malignant-appearing soft-tissue mass with paranasal sinus base destruction.

Peritonitis caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis in a kidney transplant recipient: case report and literature review.

Blastomyces dermatitidis is a dimorphic fungus endemic to the midwestern, south-central, and southeastern United States known to cause disseminated infection in immunocompromised individuals. We report a case of B. dermatitidis peritonitis in a renal allograft recipient with new-onset ascites and cytomegalovirus encephalitis. Peritoneal blastomycosis is a rare clinical entity and, to our knowle...

Mixed pulmonary infection with Strongyloides stercoralis and Blastomyces dermatitidis.

We report the first case of mixed pulmonary infection with Strongyloides stercoralis and Blastomyces dermatitidis. Histopathology from the lung biopsy showed structures consistent with B. dermatitidis and S. stercoralis. A parasitology exam from a bronchi alveolar lavage yielded an immature rhabditiform larva and female worm. Fungal cultures grew B. dermatitidis.

Blastomyces dermatitidis yeast cells inhibit nitric oxide production by alveolar macrophage inducible nitric oxide synthase.

The ability of pathogens to evade host antimicrobial mechanisms is crucial to their virulence. The dimorphic fungal pathogen Blastomyces dermatitidis can infect immunocompetent patients, producing a primary pulmonary infection that can later disseminate to other organs. B. dermatitidis possesses a remarkable ability to resist killing by alveolar macrophages. To date, no mechanism to explain thi...

Fungal Infections of Respiratory Tract-Final Section

Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, and Penicillium marneffei are endemic dimorphic fungi that may infect the respiratory tract. Sporothrix schenkeii, which manifests the typical thermal dimorphism of the endemic dimorphic organisms, does not seem to follow a geographically defined endemic pattern of distribution...

Isolation of Blastomyces dermatitidis yeast from lung tissue during murine infection for in vivo transcriptional profiling.

Blastomyces dermatitidis belongs to a group of thermally dimorphic fungi that grow as sporulating mold in the soil and convert to pathogenic yeast in the lung following inhalation of spores. Knowledge about the molecular events important for fungal adaptation and survival in the host remains limited. The development of high-throughput analytic tools such as RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) has potentia...
